Opening up a world of education

Children love to learn. If they are denied access to knowledge, we also deny them the opportunity to change their lives for the better.

PAMOJA TUDUMISHE ELIMU

Promotion of quality and inclusive education for the retention and engagement of students at risk of dropping out in Kenya and Tanzania

Over the course of three years, this multi-country project aims to reach 10,932 children “high risk” and “most at risk” of dropping out of school across Tanzania (Kinondoni, Temeke, and Dar es Salaam) and Kenya (Migori and Norok counties). The project will target children who are most vulnerable to critical risk factors such as orphan status, disability, gender-specific risks, abuse, poverty, low quality of education, child labour, and violence in school.

Using a multi-faceted approach to a systemic problem, the project will:

  • Enhance quality education delivery through training of teachers and child protection service providers;
  • Improve infrastructure that created barriers to access, building sanitization and awareness among community and school stakeholders;
  • Design a tailored data management tool to better identify and monitor children at risk of dropping out;
  • Deliver specific services and sensitization processes for the inclusion of children with disabilities (CwD), showing evidence of psychosocial distress, and girls;
  • Reinforce family and community engagement in preventing drop-out; and
  • Conduct individual and group counselling sessions on positive parenting.

Barriers:

  • Poverty
  • Gender discrimination
  • Child Labour
  • Disabilities
  • Low-Quality Education

Solutions:

  • Provision of school materials
  • Construction of WASH Facilities
  • Strengthened child protection mechanisms at community & regional level
  • Psychosocial Support
  • Construction/Refurbishment of classrooms
