Supporting Youth Self-Employment in Ethiopia
Project Status

Stemming from Silatech and QFFD’s joint efforts to support youth economic empowerment in Ethiopia, Silatech and Siinquee Bank (formerly Oromia Credit and Saving Share Company- OCSSCO) partnered in 2020 to connect over 100,000 young people to self-employment opportunities.
The joint project leveraged Siinquee Bank’s developmental agenda for Oromia State. Oromia State is the most populous region in Ethiopia and is home to approximately one third of its population. As the region has high youth unemployment rates, the project targeted young people between the ages of 18 and 35.
The project provided them with financial and non-financial services required to start, sustain, and expand income generating businesses in order to provide for themselves, their families, and to contribute to their communities’ socio-economic development. By 2023, 76,152 beneficiaries were placed into self-employment in many sectors within the Oromia region, through the project.
