EAA Foundation Condemns ‘Deeply Alarming’ Child Rights Violations in Sudan and Urges International Action to Protect Education

Global education foundation, Education Above All (EAA) condemns the growing scale of child rights violations in Sudan.

According to UNICEF, in 100 days of conflict in Sudan there have been 2,500 reports of serious child rights violations, including 435 deaths, and 1.7 million children have been internally displaced. There are also escalating attacks against healthcare facilities.

Commenting on these reports, Maleiha Malik, Executive Director of EAA Foundation's Protect Education in Insecurity and Conflict Programme (PEIC), said:

“While conflict affects all members of society, the impact is greatest on children. Sadly, we are seeing a worsening tragedy unfurl for children in Sudan. This is a horrific tragedy for the children and their families, in a region that has seen decades of conflict. The conflict has also destroyed schools and hospitals, and displaced millions. Children are at risk of malnutrition and recruitment into armed groups. Children in Sudan are living in constant fear whilst experiencing grave violations of their most fundamental rights on a daily basis which has the gravest impact on their physical and mental well-being. “

“It is unacceptable that children continue to suffer as the innocent victims of conflict. We call on governments to take immediate action, by ensuring the full and effective implementation of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2601 and putting plans in place to prevent attacks on education. EAA Foundation's #UniteToProtect campaign raises global awareness of the importance of education and the need to protect future generations by guaranteeing the right to safe, quality education for every child.”
